Banks Group

Nick Fellows, and latterly Fellows Environmental, provided advice to Banks Group (BG) throughout the development stages of the Pond Site Green Energy Park, a large scale waste management and EfW scheme in Mid Lothian, Scotland (2007-2011). The involvement in the project began with a site identification (2007) and selection process to ascertain suitable sites for such a facility and included market analysis of the available wastes in the region and potential feedstocks and market outputs amongst many other things.

A key challenge of the project was the fast-changing landscape of legislation and funding (global recession) throughout the development period. This involved numerous large-scale changes to legislation including the introduction of Scottish Zero Waste Policy. Nick worked closely with Zero Waste Scotland and many others throughout the project providing advice to the client on short, medium and long term policy changes and implications.

A technology options appraisal process was undertaken to decide the exact technologies to be employed on-site. This included the creation of a bespoke tonnage and financial model which included selections of various combinations of MRF and EfW technologies with changes in feedstocks and financial incentives which allowed important decisions to be made.

As well as utilising FE’s comprehensive knowledge of important factors and requirements for the EfW industry during the initial stages of the project, the role also included the successful application for a 200,000tpa Energy from Waste facility including AD and ATT technologies, due-diligence to select the best technologies and operations providers for the project and full liaison with all consultees.
